A long but extremely good read about 2 Italian kids who listened in on Russian Cosmonaut. What ensued were run ins with the KGB, trips to NASA HQ and listening to SOS beeps as they faded off into the black void of space. Yeah, friggen good read.

Wouldn't we all like to be astronauts?

Something they didn’t mention in the job interview…

As I am now working in the financial sector, we take part in bank holidays.

Specifically, the one coming up on Monday.

Take that, toy and freight industries, you can’t win!

And, because it is stuck in my head, and thus should be in yours:

Potential Shipping Port dubbed a Cuttlefish Homewrecker (by me)

Down in Whyalla South Australia, big business is looking to build a shipping port right where some Giant Cuttlefish live. I can understand industry needing to move ahead and build infrastructure so they can export their goods… but won’t someone please think of the cuttlefish? Well, it seems someone is.

Lyn Breuer, the state member for Giles is stating her concern for local community and boutique tourism activities regarding the cuttlefish.

“(The cuttlefish) have become a unique worldwide tourism attraction.
“Film crews from all over the world visit the area.”

Not surprisingly the Minister for Tourism Jane Lomax-Smith feels the same way and echos Lyn Breuer’s concern over the area’s development. The local tourism is largely dependant on the cuttlefish still being around for many years to come, so it’s in her best interest to be cautious of anything that would disturb their natural habitat.

I whole heartedly support these two lady’s causes.

I say anyone that builds a shipping port near a cuttlefish house is bringing about their own demise. Cuttlefish are damn smart. Industry would be wise to keep their distance unless having their ships overrun by a swarm of angry cuttlefish is high on their to do list.

Train the wondercat has been taught a new trick! Flick a hairtie into her current rug lined kittycastle and she’ll dive on in. Keep flicking them at her and she’ll catch em, nom em, then put em away for later nomming.

Sadly, all this extra intelligence hasn’t made Train any less bitey when it comes to Liz’s feet.

There’s been a bunch of hype here in Australia surrounding Cadel Evans and his bid to win the 2008 Tour de France, but that’s to be expected really. It’s when the international media start jumping on board that you begin to get the feeling that he’s got half a chance.

Much like last year, he needed to make up one and a half minutes in the final time trial. He clawed back a bit of time, but unfortunately like last year it wasn’t enough to take the yellow jersey into the final day of riding.

Oh Noes Cabel

To come second in this fashion once would’ve given him massive amounts of drive to train and train and train. But for it to happen a second time…. yeah…. watch out for Cadel at next year’s tour.

Yes, it’s true

More on The Comedy Store’s Closure

Chortle.co.uk has picked up on some more info, it seems:

Tony Bailey, co-founder of rival promoters Laugh Garage, told Chortle that the Comedy Store had gone into voluntary liquidation, cancelled acts and laid off its staff.

He said: ‘It shut its recently opened Parramatta venue last week and this week has cancelled all shows at its Fox Studio [Entertainment Quarter] venue. It has already notified booked acts of the closure and has terminated floor staff.’

And, I didn’t mention in the previous post, but The Comedy Store has been open for the past twenty seven years.

Interestingly, The Laugh Garage is planning on opening a dedicated comedy venue on the corner of Elizabeth & Park Streets in Sydney City in September. While they’ll have the advantage of getting the city workers hanging around for some night entertainment, I don’t think there’ll be easy access parking or anything similar to help them out, like at Moore Park.

Also, here is a SMH article from a few days ago, which doesn’t really say anything extra.

Comedy Store Moore Park Closes

Posted in comedy, girlthings, local by Liz

After the closure of The Comedy Store Parramatta, the sad news comes that The Comedy Store in Moore Park has now closed.

I can’t find anything official other than a piece in Time Out Sydney which doesn’t have much information. And when you head for The Comedy Store’s website, the page doesn’t even seem to exist anymore. I would have thought an announcement on the front page might have been a better way to do it (if, indeed, pulling down the page was their way of showing they’d closed).

Jarod and I happened to be at (what now seems to be) the last ever show last Saturday. We made it, along with a couple hundred others, despite the pilgrims needing the area around Moore Park closed off for the weekend. It wasn’t spectacular, but I certainly didn’t see any signs of a comedy room that was dying or wasn’t filling enough seats. The MC, Daniel Moore, even mentioned next weeks acts and we assumed it was a normal Saturday night.

I can’t see this being a good thing for the Sydney comedy scene. The Comedy Store was the only venue to run comedy most nights a week, which gave local comedians a chance to earn some money, and they bought international and interstate comics in, which also gives the smaller rooms access to people they’d never be able to pay to bring in.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. But c’mon, Comedy Store, a bit of communication would go a long way.

I found the answer…
