It’s meant for Open Mic Musicians, but I can see a lot of parallels to Open Mic Comedy. Simultaneously brilliant and scary all at the same time.

There is something wrong with our cat.

All I can say is that we didn’t put her there.

Firstly, sometimes our stats make me giggle:

Secondly, I didn’t realise that the Doug Anthony All Stars were back in fashion? I mean, yeah, I loved them back in the day (albeit 5 years after they disbanded), but I wasn’t sure it warranted a DVD in 2008?

Linky for those who have no idea who the Doug Anthony All Stars are/were
I almost want to get it. Almost.

Site Redesign for A Mic In Hand

Mmm, Labour Day. The greatest of all public holidays as it falls in what is otherwise a drought of work free days. I spent my Labour Day fiddling with all things html, css, psd and php. Putting aside the irony of working 8+ hours on a public holiday to that commemorates the introduction of a standard working day… I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

A Mic In Hand
A Mic In Hand

To cut a long story short, a Mic in Hand now has a fresh redesign courtesy of Liz and myself. It’s also been split into a Sydney and Melbourne sections to coincide with the opening of their brand new comedy room in Melbourne later this month.

It’s got a simple grayscale design that was immediately embraced by a client who was welcoming of new ideas and designs. Straight forward html, css and php streamline it and enable the new owner to edit pages without (much) help. Suffice to say I’m quite smitten with the new design. I really enjoyed the process and am especially enjoying the result.

Comedy Store to reopen?

Speaking of Comedy…

First, we went to the first and last gala for the Parramatta Comedy Store. (The photos of which, by the way, have finally made their way on to the internet. We sat on them for ages as we didn’t know the fate of the venues and well, we were lazy. But, go to Photos in the top left and have a look. Now!).

Then, we went to the last show at the Moore Park Comedy Store. (The comments on that entry are kinda amusing).

And now there are rumours that Star 100 Entertainment might be taking it over? Or, at least, they’re holding a one night only gala at the venue…

In welcome news in a world filled with heralds of doom and gloom, Star 100 Entertainment is showcasing its awesome homegrown stable of hilarious acts in a one night only spectacular sure to give you a comedy fix like no other.

What is most interesting however is that the showcase is being staged at the iconic Comedy Store at the Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park. As many Sydney comedy fans will know, the iconic Store reluctantly shut its doors a couple of months ago.

Rumours of its reopening have persisted and Star 100’s showcase (which features Cracker favourites including: the Axis of Awesome (just back from Edinburgh with rave reviews), Steve Philp, (award winning) Amelia J Hunter, Chris Radburn, Paresh Khandha, Sally Kimpton and Brett Nichols and local comedy icons Jackie Loeb and special guest MC Lady Julia Morris) may be pointing to something more permanent (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

Watch this space….

From the Cracker Comedy website.

The Star 100 website is advertising it as a ‘One Night Only’ show, on the 11th October.

Interesting…

Bill Bailey does the State Theatre

As Liz posted over there (*points*) we went and saw Bill Bailey on Monday night. Black Books made me a lukewarm fan before meeting Liz, then Liz’s love of comedy made me a big fan. The man is a seriously talented musician and comedian, and thus buying tickets to his Australian show was a no brainer.

Liz and I discussed it in the half time break (I refuse to call it an intermission) and while both our heads recognised the funnies as being funny, they were too similar to his previous material (Part Troll) and thus not outrageously laugh out loud funny. It was all different enough, but his style of comedy has become far too ingrained. Sadly, I do believe Bill Bailey has become a bit typecast as the eccentric looking comedian/musician.

It wasn’t all bad though. At a random point Bill wandered off stage to investigate what ended up being a man with an angle grinder slicing up the road outside the theatre. This and a handful of other improvised moments were where I laughed the hardest.

Call me jaded but I’m only giving Bill Bailey 8 out of 13 baker’s loaves. He’s still very good at what he does, it’s just that what he does is hardly new. Given the analogy above, the word stale comes to mind.

More on The Comedy Store’s Closure

Chortle.co.uk has picked up on some more info, it seems:

Tony Bailey, co-founder of rival promoters Laugh Garage, told Chortle that the Comedy Store had gone into voluntary liquidation, cancelled acts and laid off its staff.

He said: ‘It shut its recently opened Parramatta venue last week and this week has cancelled all shows at its Fox Studio [Entertainment Quarter] venue. It has already notified booked acts of the closure and has terminated floor staff.’

And, I didn’t mention in the previous post, but The Comedy Store has been open for the past twenty seven years.

Interestingly, The Laugh Garage is planning on opening a dedicated comedy venue on the corner of Elizabeth & Park Streets in Sydney City in September. While they’ll have the advantage of getting the city workers hanging around for some night entertainment, I don’t think there’ll be easy access parking or anything similar to help them out, like at Moore Park.

Also, here is a SMH article from a few days ago, which doesn’t really say anything extra.

Comedy Store Moore Park Closes

After the closure of The Comedy Store Parramatta, the sad news comes that The Comedy Store in Moore Park has now closed.

I can’t find anything official other than a piece in Time Out Sydney which doesn’t have much information. And when you head for The Comedy Store’s website, the page doesn’t even seem to exist anymore. I would have thought an announcement on the front page might have been a better way to do it (if, indeed, pulling down the page was their way of showing they’d closed).

Jarod and I happened to be at (what now seems to be) the last ever show last Saturday. We made it, along with a couple hundred others, despite the pilgrims needing the area around Moore Park closed off for the weekend. It wasn’t spectacular, but I certainly didn’t see any signs of a comedy room that was dying or wasn’t filling enough seats. The MC, Daniel Moore, even mentioned next weeks acts and we assumed it was a normal Saturday night.

I can’t see this being a good thing for the Sydney comedy scene. The Comedy Store was the only venue to run comedy most nights a week, which gave local comedians a chance to earn some money, and they bought international and interstate comics in, which also gives the smaller rooms access to people they’d never be able to pay to bring in.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. But c’mon, Comedy Store, a bit of communication would go a long way.

Parramatta Comedy Store is dead?

After going to the ‘opening gala’ and taking photos, and then writing about it, it seems the Parramatta Comedy Store has since died a quiet death.

The Comedy Store website seems to have removed all traces, although if you Google search you can come up with a few random pages from the old site, which all show a blank calender. With no articles or announcements on their demise, it’s almost as though it didn’t exist.

I think it’s a little sad this has happened. While I was unsure if Paramatta would be the ideal audience for five nights a week of comedy (apparently not), it still seemed like a good idea to bring some diversity to the comedy scene down there. And with all the bickering and childishness that happened between The Laugh Garage and The Comedy Store during the set up, I wanted The Comedy Store to succeed just to show that a bit of healthy competition can be a good thing, and that the crowds would enjoy a choice.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens now with both rooms, and what will happen with The Comedy Store’s venue (whether The Laugh Garage will try get it back). Or even if an explanation will be given by The Comedy Store.

It seems by the amount of hits on my last post from generic Google searches that people are still trying to find more info about the room, but are forced to read my drivel about it.
