Every time I receive a newsletter from Nut and Bee, Jarod has to restrain me from buying all the cute things.
Annette’s Sketchbook Sweeties are absolutely adorable. I already have eight of them hanging on our walls (unfortunately, in out of the way places due to the whole ‘no putting holes in walls while renting thing’), and have been wanting to add to the collection for ages.

Although, until we get walls we can poke holes in, I’ve had to settle for a notepad and a bunch of stickers. Still, it’s a win in my books. :D :D
Matt Smith has been named as the actor who will take over from David Tennant in Doctor Who - making him the youngest actor to take on the role.
At 26, Smith is three years younger than Peter Davison when he signed up to play the fifth Doctor in 1981.
Smith will first appear on TV screens as the 11th Doctor in 2010.
He looks a bit… emo.
Thanks to the crazy88 boys I’m now semi addicted to Travian. It’s one of those sassy online in-browser strategy type games. I played Utopia on and off here and there, but seems a little different. Somewhat more refined.
Once I’ve been playing for more than a few days I’ll post a mini review. Be warned though, it might only consist of a few (swear) words if I end up getting smooshed by people bigger than me.
There’s a reason I couldn’t be a journalist, and that’s because I’m not that good at writing things as soon as they happen. Things generally sit for a day or two. If someone pokes me in that time, then I might write about it, if not, it generally gets forgotten.
But, on Thursday night, there was a power outage. It was near midnightish, and neither Jarod and I could sleep. So, we used the internets on our phones and discovered, thanks to ABC Online’s superior news coverage, that we could blame a Marrickville Chocolate Factory for the no powerness. (Or, perhaps the fact it was next door to an electricity sub station).
On Jarod’s super early bike ride the next day, he rode past and took a photo or two:

Apparently around 35,000 homes were affected, but all was restored by 6am.
It’s a pretty simple concept. Hit the play button, watch the cats be stupid, piss yourself with laughter. Well, that’s what I just did anyway.
A little while ago I did a little mini review on Goosyncing Google Calendar to my Nokia E71. Well this is the even shorter review which takes place after using it every second day or so.
The only negative that both Liz and I found is that a week or so ago we both couldn’t sync for a few days. An error message stating that a connection couldn’t be established or something. We presumed their server was down and were just patient and things returned to normal pretty quickly. Other than that it’s been a bundle of joy which works nice and seamlessly such that you don’t know it’s there.
If you want to sync your Google Calendar to your E71 (or anything on the S60 platform), get Goosync. Don’t worry about the subscription version unless you’re a super duper mega power user, the free version will do fine.
I figure that I should probably do a filler post as the ‘last for the year’. I know I wont do it tomorrow — I’m not one of the lucky ones that has time off.
But anyway.
2008 in Summary:
January: Unemployed! I do miss it a little, but I don’t miss the no-money-coming-in thing.
February: Started with LEGO.
March: Spent lots of my pay on aforementioned LEGO.
April: Missed the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Tried to ignore the coverage as much as possible.
May: According to our Google calendars, we wormed the cat. How exciting!
June: We started this blog, and I made the first post. June was also the month our hot water heater and electricity decided it wasn’t going to play fair.
July: I left LEGO and started with the mysterious Alliance.
August: Jarod created the LEGO Olympics. You may say that this should be in Jarod’s summary, but I don’t think you realise how much time, effort and table space was put into this. There was a very valid reason I made him pack the LEGO away at the end of the Olympics.
September: The second annual Train Day occured! Oh, and it was our one year anniversary. Aww.
October: Jarod finally got to meet my parents (lucky him) and I was no longer 21.
November: I got to see Emma finally get married. Through the lens, and all. (www.mrandmrshancock.com).
December: Jarod and I have now lived together for a whole year. And I keep forgetting special anniversaries like that. At least Jarod knows he’s pretty much guaranteed to look good when he remembers a date.
In 2007 I traveled a whole bunch - Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide… and this year kinda sucked that I only got to go to Bathurst, and that’s mainly because I wouldn’t have missed Emma’s wedding for the world. I didn’t get to see all the lovely people I made friends with in all those lovely cities (well, except Brisbane, I don’t call that city lovely), but thanks to the internets I can still say hi.
I have grand plans of going to Melbourne and Perth next year (along with our Brisbane trip for another wedding in Jan), but we’ll see how that goes. Apparently when it’s not a company business trip it costs money and you have to take annual leave. Aww.
Hope everyone has a fantastic New Year.
See you all in 2009.
I’d been with Vodafone for what seems like forever. They’ve always treated me nicely, and I’ve never had a problem with them. I even managed to pull Jarod over to them. Then we decided to get new phones, and went out and assessed all the carriers. Virgin came out on top because we could call and sms each other for free. Winner!
I figured I wouldn’t notice any difference, seeing as both Vodafone and Virgin piggyback off the Optus network. And, to begin with, I didn’t.
Then I got an email that said the following:
“Hey, just wondering who is this? I went to gmail on my ph and it logged into ur account.”
At first Jarod and I assumed it was spam or something bizarre like that, but curiosity got the better of me and I replied asking for a few more details. Turns out this guy was legitimate, and he too was on the Virgin network. Alright, I thought, I’ll just keep changing my password every couple of weeks, and change my settings so my Gmail app sends all it’s stuff over a secure network and we’ll be fine. Perhaps the thing that controls the packet data had a hiccup which ended badly.
But then a couple of days later I went to log into facebook for the first time on my phone (sad, I know). To my surprise, it had prepopulated with someone elses email address. Luckily for them, it hadn’t saved their password.
Today, I sent an MMS to Jarod with a photo of Train (sending a test message to see if the MMS was set up on my number). A couple of hours later I got a message from someone saying ‘Who is this?’. Apparently they’d received a photo of a baby from my number. Jarod still hasn’t received anything.
So, wtf Virgin?? If it wasn’t for the fact I don’t particularly want to pay out my contract right now, I’d be switching back to Vodafone. At least they didn’t share my log in details with other people, or send incorrect messages to people I don’t even know. Seriously.
And, no, I have not yet contacted Virgin customer service as I believe it will be a huge waste of time to get through to someone on the frontline who will probably tell me that nothing is wrong. I will probably go into one of their stores during the week and see what they have to say. But yeah, if you’re considering going to Virgin… don’t.
After living with the silly upgrade messages for a week or so, we’re now upgraded and on Wordpress 2.7! Complete with it’s brand new sexy backend interface, I’m fairly confident it’s going to rock our socks.
Oh oh, and I even managed to keep our custom made theme during this upgrade! Go me!! Do let us know if anything doesn’t display correctly or breaks.
Okay, back to GTA IV now. Cyas!
Awesome.
Need to sync your Google Calendar to your Symbian device (Nokia E71 in my case)? Look no further than GooSync.
Liz took the plunge first and signed up for/installed the free version of Goosync. Within about 5 minutes she was done and all her calendar entries were sitting on her phone. After a few days worth of syncing backwards and forwards, she proclaimed it be good, so I figured I’d jump on the bandwagon. Sadly, it was not that easy.
I registered on their site and all was looking good until it was supposed to send me something technical which would install the settings on my phone. I waited. Then waited some more. Two or three days later, Liz came to the rescue and manually configured everything. Sure, their autoinstaller didn’t work, but thanks to my awesome girlfriend I now have a whole stack of my events/appointments/meetings from my Google Calendar sitting on my E71.
There aren’t too many more things I want the E71 to be able to do. Mobile posting to this blog thing is one of em. An instant messaging type client would be nice too. The others, I can’t quite think of at the moment.
In summary, GooSync gets two Jarod texting digits up!
